Mechanical engineering is an ideal career for those who are mathematically and scientifically inclined. Experience with physics, chemistry, calculus and linear and modern algebra are all fundamentals to receiving an education in this subject. While there are many courses that pertain to the application of what is learned in math and science courses there is typically some room left for basic courses as well, such as English/Literature/Writing and social sciences. For anyone who has a strong capability in those subjects, mechanical engineering is ideal. Engineering was used for military services only.

To study mechanical engineering, a strong math and science background is preferred. The ability to use technology is favored, as is the ability to be creative and think outside the box. As a career in mechanical engineering progresses, one might expect that advanced degrees with some focus on management might be helpful for promoting up to a supervisory level. Bachelor’s degrees take approximately four to five years to complete and can be very useful in starting out in this field.
