About This Degree

Earnings Potential
According to a survey of 2008 HR data, the median 50th percentile of interior designers in the U.S. make approximately $35,000 annually; however, interior designers with big budget clients make considerably more, from upwards of $60,000 anunally.

Interior Design at a Glance
Interior designers imagine and execute the appearance of commercial and residential spaces depending on clients' needs and tastes.  Interior design does require some talent for aesthetics, or being able to define and use good taste. Beyond aesthetics, there is a requirement for interpersonal skills. This is because interacting with clients and vendors who provide goods, services and repeat business is crucial to survival. Clients can be selective and it may take several attempts to understand what they are looking for and produce the desired effect. For this type of situation, the interior designer requires patience, vision and commitment. Along with client requirements come legal requirements as well. Interior design has certain regulations that must be upheld. Regulations with regard to fire codes, hazards, maintenance, building codes and handicap access must be adhered to, particularly for the success of businesses.

Obtainable Degrees
A bachelor's degree will train students to plan and design in different types of space, as well as make allowance for special regulations and circumstances. Students are taught how to present their ideas to clients, whether it is through models or computer aided drafting (CAD). Bachelor's level education also focuses on different specialties of interior design. Students can then choose whether they prefer designing rooms for homes, businesses, hospitality industry or restaurants and office buildings. Advanced degrees in interior design are available but not a requirement to begin a career in this creative field.
