The first step in your EMT training is to obtain an EMT I-Basic certification. This certification will take approximately 6 weeks to achieve.
As an EMT-I you may assess trauma, administer oxygen, perform physical examinations, administer certain medications, perform airway maintenance, and apply semi-automatic defibrillation.
Once you are an EMT-I, you can pursue your EMT-II and EMT-III allowing you to administer intravenous fluids, use manual defibrillators, and perform advanced airway management techniques. Beyond these levels, you can become an EMT-Paramedic in approximately 24 months.
